Beginning Vocabulary Building. The course will provide the inspiration and beginnings of a unique vocabulary that will help academic development in every way: including SAT preparation, essay writing, and critical reading.
This course builds widening self-confidence in mastery of oral and written English. By focusing on vocabulary in new ways with the help of expert guidance, students will learn the building blocks not only of the language but of organization and self-expression in a range of professional and academic contexts. Students will build confidence not only with the words themselves but along the links of understanding the crucial bridges between language and knowledge. This course allows the student to prepare themselves for such work as the SAT, critical and personal essays, and greater self-knowledge in academic interests. The practices are carefully selected and professionally rewarding. Passages and exercises will be comparable to those encountered on standardized tests or those encountered ever day in secondary school. Students in the course not only love vocabulary in new ways, but find life-long rewards of reading and writing. Note: the course teaches not one-word definitions but the full dictionary definition, using both the Oxford English Dictionary and the American Heritage Dictionary. Students will learn to savor, enjoy, and experiment with every meaning of a word. There will be extensive writing practice using all the new words. Intermediate Vocabulary and the Essay. This intermediate course offers a focus on vocabulary and intermediate essay writing. The course will provide students the joy and riches of an academic vocabulary. This course allows the student to build confidence especially for the SAT and other standardized exams and demands. By the end of the course students will be able to develop with sophistication and increased interest professional and personal essays necessary for the next steps in an academic progression.
