I spent three years working with the Overseas Service Bureau as a part of Australian Volunteer Abroad program. I was employed as an economics and accounting teacher in Western Samoa. the first thing i would say is that it was three of the best years of my life. We were located on the Island of Savaii half way up the side of a volcano at a boarding and day school.

The students were lovely and treated both me and my wife extremely well. the local community always made you feel welcome. I would highly recommend volunteering to anyone. It a most rewarding experience. It is not without hardship the diet was very limited and we only had electricity for a few hours each day (if the generator worked at all). The whole environment was good though we worked with many other volunteers from a variety of different agencies around the world like Peace Corps, UN volunteers, JOCV and many more.

I made some very good friends there. It is also a very rewarding experience as a teacher one feels they really are making a difference to student lives. a student that good grades and a scholarship can escape the poverty cycle and bring economic gains to there whole family. One does not volunteer for money but you do gain a lot from the experience.
