Difference between Economics and Business Studies

I mainly tutor in economics and Business Studies.  Therefore one question that both students and parents often ask me is which of the two subjects they should choose.  It appears that some universities do not like students to have done both of these subjects at the final years of Secondary school.  this is a shame as the subjects are very different and complementary subjects.  A student that undertakes both economics and business studies will find their understanding of business and the economy much improved.

Economics is a much more theoretical subject.  basic economic theory is in many ways quite divorced from what actually happens in day to day life.  economic theory is really looking at the average effect of things on the whole economy.  I find that Economics is much more liked by students who are good at it than business studies is.  A good understanding of Economics makes the individual feel they have a much greater understanding of what exactly is happening in the world around them.

Business studies though is a much more practical subject.  I do not in anyway think it easier, just more practical.  It does teach people many of the basic concepts involved in running a business.  I believe the problem though is it is to focused on big business and should focus more on small to medium sized business.  Business studies is really a combination of basic economics, accounting, marketing and human resource manage with a bit of finance and operational control thrown in.  This can be a problem for students as only a superficial knowledge of each of these areas is required but they a re quite different.

There fore my recommendation is do both if possible.  if not and you are heading to university economics is more suitable.  If you are thinking of leaving school at the end of secondary school than consider business studies.
